12 Steps to Better Business Security
- Have a security objective, loss prevention or shrinkage goal and a plan.
- Make security a top issue within your business.
- Conduct thorough background checks before hiring employees.
- Interact regularly with your employees and on the sales floor.
- Make security measures visible within your facility.
- Use a system of “checks and balances” for cash management and inventory shipping and receiving.
- Record (via security surveillance cameras) all activities at shipping and receiving points, cash collection and cash management areas and in the stockroom, at a minimum.
- Prosecute all criminal activities, regardless of cause of extent.
- Maintain security equipment in good working conditions (there are no second chances).
- Use a secure method of alarm/emergency signal transmission.
- Restrict employee and customer access to vital areas within your business.
- Regularly review your results and take corrective actions where needed.
